Heads Up Announcement!ASSH Offers Affiliate Membership for Hand Therapists
The American Society for Surgery of the Hand will begin accepting affiliate members October 1, 2008.
“In the clinical setting, the relationship between hand surgeons and hand therapists is a true partnership from which our patients benefit enormously. For many patients, the result of their surgical treatment is as much related to the weeks of post operative therapy as to the actual surgical procedure,” said Dr. Steven Glickel, president of ASSH. “It is appropriate that hand surgeons and therapists will now be able to be members of the same professional organization and, as we do in the office and hospital, work side by side to expand hand surgery knowledge and improve patient care.” “This exciting new affiliate membership category gives hand therapists a viable presence in ASSH and facilitates opportunities for professional collaboration on mutual initiatives that advance evidence-based practice and research,” said Judith Bell Krotoski, OTR, FAOTA, CHT, and Elaine Fess MS, OTR. FAOTA, CHT. “ASSH initially served as a model and catalyst for the founding hand therapists to achieve advanced standards and improved patient care. This new membership category does not replace the therapists’ professional society, ASHT. Instead, ASSH meetings and resources afford hand therapists unique and enriched learning opportunities.”
Membership perks include: a subscription to the Journal of Hand Surgery, reduced prices for educational opportunities, networking, and the ability to serve on ASSH committees. There are several requirements for the affiliate membership with ASSH. These include: · Members must be fully licensed as an allied healthcare professional (i.e., hand therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or registered nurse). · The therapist must specialize in the treatment and rehabilitation of disorders of the upper limbs. · Hand therapists must maintain membership in the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT). · The therapist must be of high moral, ethical, and professional standing, as attested to by an active member of the Hand Society. Potential affiliate members will need a reference letter from a current ASSH Active member as an application requirement. Applications will be available September 1, 2008. The first class will receive membership in October, 2008. More information will be shared on the ASSH Website, including the application, and the HANDSIGHTS Website as information becomes available. Stay tuned. Be sure to register for the noon therapist sessions Thursday and Friday of the ASSH meetings in order to be assured attendance. Space may be limited. 63rd Annual Meeting HANDSIGHTS
